Living Shorelines: Green Engineering Methods for Coral Reef Rehabilitation
We will build the first pilot reef with rrreefs´ easy-to-handle 3D-printed stackable brick system. The bricks can be assembled in an infinite number of compositions, creating large reefs with customizable shapes, adapted to the natural environment and water flow conditions.
Without action, up to 95% of corals worldwide are expected to be dead by 2050
Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth! By now we have lost more than 40% of the global coral reef system worldwide due to overfishing, coastal development, sedimentation, marine-based pollution, and climate change. Coral reefs provide a habitat for more than 25% of marine life, and reef structures protect coastlines from damaging storms and erosion, absorbing up to 97% of wave energy. In less than 30 years, more than 90% of all corals in the world could be dead (IPCC). When the coral cover dies, the reef often loses its three-dimensional framework, leaving coastlines vulnerable and local communities without food and income.
About the workshop
In partnership with rrreefs and Corales de Paz´s allies, we will build the first pilot reef with our easy-to-handle 3D-printed stackable brick system made from clay in this workshop. The bricks can be assembled in an infinite number of compositions, creating large reefs with customizable shapes, adapted to the natural environment and water flow conditions. We will showcase the feasibility of construction and customization with a subsequent multi-year monitoring program. This new approach of passive, structure-based reef regeneration will be combined with proven active reef restoration approaches such as coral fragmentation, gardening, and transplantation techniques perfected by Corales de Paz.
