SSI Marine Ecology Card

¿Do you want to know what other ecosystems besides coral reefs we can find in the oceans? ¿Why is there life in the abyss?  The non-diving SSI Marine Ecology program gives you the concepts and principles to better understand the marine life you see while diving.

This course is designed to provide an overview of marine ecosystems, the biodiversity of marine life, marine ecology, oceanography, the human impacts, and the management and conservation actions in place. Improving your understanding of the oceans and marine life with this specialty program will help you build confidence and have a remarkable understanding of why and what we see while scuba diving.

Check our Responsible Diving System and discover more programs to gain the knowledge and skills to start helping build resilient coral reefs while diving.

There are no required dives for this program, but in order to master the marine ecology concepts learned Corales de Paz encourages you to perform, at any of our field programs, optional special in-water skills and exercises. You can also undertake open water training dives with any active SSI Dive Professional.

You can start today and complete the Digital Learning materials. These materials are self-paced, and you can complete them anywhere, anytime, once you download them to your SSI MySSI app available in Google Play Store or the Apple Store.

In this e-learning course you will:

Learn to identify the major ecosystems of the oceans, describe the factors and processes that lead to different ecosystems, and explain why each ecosystem can have unique and different organisms living in them.

Construct an explanation of the basic processes of evolution and how they lead to a species and recognize how to classify marine animals into their respective taxonomic categories.

Explain how energy from the sun is converted to matter and moved through a food chain and ecosystem, and develop a logical argument focused on how ecosystems are governed by ecological processes and identify how they operate through interactions between species and the environment.

Define physical properties of seawater and explain how these properties affect the oceans and identify patterns in how physical factors acting on water such as wind and the gravity of the moon affect how oceans behave.

Identify the ways in which humans directly and negatively impact the oceans, recognize major global issues facing our oceans’health, and the management and conservation actions developed to stop our negative impact.

The three components are knowledge, skills, and behavior, and together form the Corales de Paz Responsible Diving System which helps you ensure that you always put more than what you take from coral reefs.

A reef user like you, (e.g. beachgoer, snorkeler or diver) must have a proper foundation of knowledge to understand how coral reefs function, and their strong connection with humans, to be aware of the impact you are causing to coral reefs. Practical training offers you the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to measure and reduce the impact caused on coral reefs

The SSI Marine Ecology course is a specialty program part of our Coral Reef Ecology I group of specialty programs that lets you advanced your knowledge for coral reef monitoring. Check your progression in our  Meaningful Diving Universe, a group of courses and training we believe provide important knowledge and skills for ocean lovers and reef users like you to actively engage in building coral reef resilience.

I LOVED IT!! It’s simple, easy to understand and very precise, it provides you with new knowledge of the marine ecosystem that allows us to know more about this wonderful world, which is key to understand a little bit more of its great complexity and its relationship with other ecosystems, which finally translates into divers with more knowledge and better understanding, allowing us to continue with our great responsibility as ocean ambassadors, exercising and promoting its conservation and care.
